Applying to the PA Fire Credentialing Program
The application is broken into nine (9) sections to encompass a well-rounded fire officer. The application is then assessed using a point based system that is calculated as such:
1.Work History/Experience
a.1 point for each year served – maximum of 20 points.
b. Member in good standing.
c. Letter of support from municipal leader(s) or fire chief with dates served.
2.Fire Officer Experience
a.2 points for each year served – maximum of 10 points.
b. Resume showing appointment dates, departments served, and rank attained.
c. Letter of support from municipal leader(s) or fire chief with dates served.
3. Formal Education
a.Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
b.A college degree can be in any subject for credit. A copy of the degree is required.
c. All degrees and course work must be from an accredited college or university.
d. Approved Municipal Fire Academy 5 points.
e. Associate degree 10 points.
f. Bachelor’s degree 15 points.
g. Master’s degree 20 points.
h. Doctorate PhD 25 points.
Points are awarded based on the fire officer’s highest level of education.
4.Fire Certification
a.Certification recognized and obtained through IFSAC and Pro Board standards.
b.Fire Officer I 5 points
c.Fire Officer II 10 points
d.Fire Officer III 15 points
e.Fire Officer IV 20 points
f.Points are awarded based on the fire officer’s highest level of certification.
5.Other Certification
a.Certification recognized and obtained through IFSAC and Pro Board standards.
b.Hazardous Materials Operations 5 points
c.Hazardous Materials Technician 10 points
d.Hazardous Material Incident Command 15 points
e.EMT - Basic 5 points
f.EMT – Intermediate 10 points
g.EMT – Paramedic or PHRN 15 points
h.Fire Inspector I 5 points
i.Fire Inspector II 10 points
j.Fire Inspector III 15 points
k.Fire Instructor I 5 points
l.Fire Instructor II 10 points
m.Fire Instructor III 15 points
n.Any level of technical rescue 5 points
o.Any PEMA G-series certificates 5 points
p.Points are awarded based on the fire officer’s highest levels of certification combined toa maximum of 20 points.
6.Professional Development
a.All programs, seminars, and classes should have a leadership focus.
b.Points awarded shall be for attendance within the past three years.
c.A copy of each certificate must be provided.
d.5 points for each attendance – maximum of 20 points.
7.Association Memberships
a.1 point for each active membership – maximum of 5 points.
b.Candidate shall be a member for at least one year prior to the date of application.
c.Membership shall be in fire, rescue, or emergency management will be accepted.
d.Local, county, state, regional, country, and international organizations are accepted.
8.Community Service
a.1 point for each active community event – maximum of 5 points.
b.Candidate shall have attended and actively participate in community events to supportthe greater good of the community through outreach and engagement.
c.Points awarded shall be for participation at events within the past three years.
9.Professional Self-Assessment
Candidates must demonstrate training, education, certification, and experience in the
Pennsylvania Fire Service.
To apply for a fire officer, you will need a minimum of 40 points of documentation. For a Chief Fire Officer, you will need a minimum of 80 points of documentation.

To complete this application, you will need to gather the following:
Letter of support from municipal leader(s) or fire chief with dates served
Resume showing appointment dates, departments served, and rank attained
Proof of formal education completed (diploma, GED, degrees, etc.)
Proof of Certification recognized and obtained through IFSAC and Pro Board standards
Proof of any and all other related certifications
Proof of all professional development (all programs, seminars, and classes should have a leadership focus) within the last three years
Proof of participation in any community service events in the last three years
Proof of any association memberships
candidate must be a member for at least one year prior to the date of application

local, county, state, regional, country, and international organizations are accepted.
Once you have gathered all of your documents, you may proceed with your application. The application should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and once submitted, you will receive an email of confirmation. After you submit your application, you will need to pay your membership fee ($200). If your membership fee is not received within 24 hours of your application, your application will be placed on hold.
